Navy Mosaic Shawl Collar Coat

A soft loose coat sewn from a navy and black kimono silk covered with traditional Japanese designs of bamboo, flowers, village houses, carts, rivers and bridges. It has a wide shawl collar covered with hand appliquéd squares. These squares were remnants from another project. When cut into squares the designs become abstract shapes and colors. For contract, the underside of the collar is a rusty-red colored silk. Smaller squares of this same fabric are also appliquéd onto the collar.

Like a shawl, the wide collar can be worn laying flat over the shoulders or folded under into a narrower shape. It can be pulled over and pinned high or low to reveal the red underside.

The coat is fully lined. It measures 54 inches at the bust, 57 at the hips and 33 1/2 length at the center back.

All pieces are hand made one at a time in my Portland, Oregon studio. The fabrics are vintage Japanese silks. The very special fabric used in this coat was woven and stenciled by Japanese artisans. Although it had been intended to be sewn into kimonos, the bolt had been in storage.

Each piece I make is unique, most are one of a kind. I ship USPS priority at the beginning of the week.
