Black and Magenta Kiku Car Coat

$685.00 / Sold Out

A one of a kind jacket sewn from a vintage Japanese kimono silk. The black fabric has a traditional design of 'kiku,' or chrysanthemum flowers. The magenta colored flowers have been abstracted to a round ball shape with a simple blue and white center. It is 'meisen' silk, a kind of ikat. The fabric is loosely woven, printed with the design, then unwoven and finally rewoven so that the images have a blurred edge. When open, the collar and facings have a deep magenta colored silk woven in a very subtle almost plaid design. The jacket can be worn with the top button open or closed. 6 vintage glass buttons line the front. Pockets are in the side seams. The jacket is fully lined with silk charmeuse.

Reminiscent of the classic car coat shape this flattering jacket is a loose, semi-A shape. The garment measures 43 inches bust, 45 inches hips, length at center back 28 1/2 inches. Size small. [Approximate industry size 12.]

All pieces are hand made one at a time in my Portland, Oregon studio. Most fabrics are vintage Japanese silks. These very special fabrics were woven, stenciled, tie-dyed and painted by Japanese artisans. Many were still in the bolt on their way to become kimonos. The fabric in this jacket had been sewn into a kimono but was no longer wearable. I removed the hand stitching, washed and prepared the fabric for its new life. Each piece I make is unique, most are one of a kind. I ship USPS priority at the beginning of the week.
